Description

Cooma is the largest town in the Snowy Mountains region and the capital of the state’s alpine area. It was established as a village in 1849 and since then has welcomed gold miners, graziers and the thousands of people from all around the world who built the mighty Snowy Scheme.

An Historical Walk and Drive Brochure is available from the Cooma Visitors Centre.

Cooma has an abundance of accommodation and offers a wide range, from budget, 3 star & 4 star Motels, B&Bs, holiday cottages, a caravan park and pub style with share facilities.

The history of accommodation in Cooma is interesting as the town for many years was know as the 'Gateway to the Snowy Mountains" and with the popularity of skiing and the construction of the Snowy Scheme in the early days, tourism became a boon to the township.

Thousands of visitors met in Cooma and joined car convoys to travel to the mountains and it soon became apparent that the hotels were not suited to accommodate the many families now visiting the area.

The first motel was the Ambassador Motel built in 1958. It was not only Cooma's first motel but is also believed to be the first motel built in country New South Wales. It later became known as the Hawaii Motel and is presently called the Greenleigh Motel.

Cooma offers an escape and a retreat with activities and attractions for a variety of personalities.

We have several parks with meandering creeks and rivers, weeping willows and magnificient deciduous trees.

The vast area surrounding Cooma also provides recreational activities that cover four distinct seasons.

Please come in and talk to the locals at the Cooma Visitors Centre for ideas to suit your interests. Relax and get into Our Country.

When it comes to eating out in the Cooma district the world is at your feet. Over the years the nations of the world have been brought to Cooma, most notably by the Snowy Mountains Scheme, allowing us to boast an exciting and diverse selection of restaurants, cafes and wineries.

While you're here don't miss a taste of the local produce. Goat cheese, organic herbs, gourmet lavender, dips, chutneys, spices and of course our local trout - smoked, poached, grilled or even as a pate with sundried tomato.

A visit to one of our local wineries or distilleries is a must. The Monaro region and Snowy Mountains offers a wide range of cold climate wines, beer, schnapps & vodka.

Many retail shops can be found around the town including 3 supermarkets, clothing stores including Target and Rivers Clearance Store, Bellissima Clearance Store, giftware and craft shops, outdoor and camping suppliers and many other speciality shops to keep any retail enthusiast happy.
